Atelier by nealvdv
My school for anyone who wants to learn programming and IT. You learn by doing, I review your work, and you grow rank by rank.
What Atelier is
An atelier is where you learn a trade from someone who does it every day. That is the idea: not a course you watch, but lessons and assignments with which you build things yourself, and someone who reviews your work and tells you what could be better.
By day I write software for mainframes; in the evening I build websites and software for freelancers and small businesses. What I learned in those two worlds, I pass on in Atelier.
Who it’s for
You’re starting from zero
You have never written a line of code. You start with the basics: how a computer works and how to use the terminal.
You want to change direction
You work in another field and want to move into IT, at your own pace, next to your job.
You already know a bit
You already code a little and want to learn it properly, with someone who reviews your work critically.
Seventeen crafts, the whole trade
From Linux and networks to web apps, security and mainframe. You pick one to start with; each craft says what you need to know first.

Three ranks
You grow per craft. Master in one and Compagnon in another is perfectly fine.
Apprentice
You learn the basics of a craft, with someone looking over your work.
Compagnon
You master a craft and build real things with it, for yourself, your job or a club.
Master
You work independently in your craft and can pass it on.
A rank can’t be bought: you earn it with work, whatever offer you choose. I assess the test for the next rank myself.
How the lessons work
Pick a craft
Start with the basics or go straight to what draws you. Each craft is split into modules, rank by rank.
Learn and do the assignment
Each module has a few lessons and one assignment with a result someone else can check.
I review your work
You hand in your assignment and get my comments line by line. What is good gets the master’s mark.
Take your test
With the modules of your rank and a test you become Compagnon, and later Master. Real work, assessed by me.

Your teacher
I’m Neal Van de Velde. Since 2022 I have been a mainframe developer (COBOL on IBM and Unisys), with certificates you can check yourself, and with nealvdv I build websites, webshops and software. In Atelier I teach you what I do every day.

When does Atelier open?
Soon. Let me know you’re interested and I’ll write to you as soon as you can start.
Do I need to know anything already?
No. If you start from zero, you begin with the basics. Each craft says what you need to know first.
What does it cost?
Starting is free. The amounts for the subscription and one-to-one are not set yet; they will be here as soon as they are.
Do I work for nealvdv as a learner?
No. In Atelier you learn; you don’t work for me or for my clients. What you make stays yours.
What language are the lessons in?
The lessons are in Dutch. Reviews and one-to-one can also be in French or English.
What do I need?
A laptop and some time each week. You work at your own pace.
Want to start?
Atelier isn’t open yet. Let me know you’re interested and you’ll be among the first to hear.
